What Size Belt for a Pony Troy-Bilt Tiller?

The Troy-Bilt Pony Tiller model gives you the option of tilling in both forward and reverse directions. The tines are powered through clutch controls and belt drives that rotate them. Over time, these belts can become unserviceable. Too keep your tiller operable, you need the correct size belts for replacement.
  1. Forward Clutch Belt

    • When you depress the forward clutch control, your Pony tiller pushes the tines forward via the forward clutch belt. The forward clutch belt’s size is 23.8 inches long and 1/2 inch wide. To replace the forward clutch belt, follow the illustrations in the operator manual. First, remove the nuts and remove the belt cover. Move the reverse belt to the side by loosening it and letting the bottom half of the belt hang off the tiller. Take the forward clutch cable off of the idler arm bracket and remove the forward clutch belt starting at the transmission pulley. Continue to pull up and out until the belt is removed. Install the new belt starting at the bottom of the engine drive pulley.

    Reverse Clutch Belt

    • The reverse clutch belt’s size is 27 inches long and 3/8 inch wide. The reverse clutch control is not used as often but the clutch belt is still subject to wear and tear. Replace the reverse clutch belt by first removing the flange locknuts and taking off the belt cover. Pull the clutch belt down and off of the transmission pulley. Loosen the wire belt guide from the reverse idler arm pulley but do not remove the locknut and screw. Install the new belt starting from inside the belt guide and around the reverse idler arm pulley.

    Safety

    • Before performing any maintenance on the Troy-Bilt Pony Tiller belts, take specific safety precautions to prevent injury or damage to yourself or your equipment. Do not touch the belts after operation because they may be hot. Also be aware of heat from other surrounding surfaces. Let the engine cool down and disconnect the spark plug wire.

    Maintenance

    • To ensure your Troy Bilt Pony tiller is in operable conditions, you should inspect the belt conditions according to the maintenance schedule. Check the drive belt tensions two hours after first using the tiller and every 10 hours thereafter. Pull the forward clutch control lever up and measure the clutch spring coil. If it is not 2 1/2 inches, replace the belt. Look for visible tears and obvious wear before replacing. Keep any lubrication items such as grease or oil away from the belt surfaces to prevent slippage.
