How to Convert a 12hp Kohler Motor to a 14hp

A 12-horsepower Kohler engine is a lot of engine by small engine standards. But even 12 hp might not provide enough power for your usage requirements under certain circumstances, such as mowing fields of high grass. Investing in a more powerful engine can be cost-prohibitive, but you can tweak your 12 hp Kohler a bit and increase the power of your Kohler engine by installing a larger spark plug and using a high-flow replacement air filter. You can remove and replace these engine parts regardless of your troubleshooting experience.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Find the spark plug on the left side of the Kohler mower and disconnect the ignition wire from the plug's rear by pulling it out with your hand. Remove the spark plug by fitting a spark plug socket over the end of a socket wrench and unscrewing the plug from its position on the engine. Use counterclockwise twists to unscrew the plug with your wrench.

Swap in a slightly larger spark plug model by setting the new plug into the vacant spark plug hole and inserting the ignition wire into its rear. The spark plug you should use will depend upon your specific model of Kohler engine. Take the old one with you to the store, and consult your user manual if it's available.

Find the air filter on the end of the carburetor, which is located halfway up the left side of the Kohler engine. Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the screws holding the filter in place on the carburetor.

    • 4

Pull the loose air filter off the Kohler's carburetor with your hands.

    • 5

Set a high-flow air filter in the old air filter's place on the end of the carburetor. Secure it with the screws you removed earlier. A high-flow air filter will increase air intake into the engine, boosting power.
