How to Modify a Homelite Weed Eater

The Homelite weed eater line features a Briggs & Stratton engine with a governor that is used to regulate the top achievable speed of the engine for fuel efficiency purposes. You can modify your Homelite weed eater by disabling the governor and allowing the engine to run unrestricted. You will not require professional experience or any lawn tool maintenance knowledge to disable your Homelite's governor, although modification of your weed eater will void its warranty.

Instructions

    • 1

Ensure the Homelite weed eater has been turned off.

    • 2

Look along the engine block and find the flywheel. The flywheel is located on the top of the engine block and is immediately recognizable due to its circular shape. It is covered with an iron shroud that is bolted down. Remove the bolts with a socket wrench to slide off the shroud and expose the flywheel.

    • 3

Check the right of the exposed Homelite's flywheel for the governor flap, which sits beside the magneto and is connected to a bolt just beneath it. Remove the flap's wire from this bolt by loosening the bolt with counterclockwise turns from the socket wrench.

    • 4

Remove the governor's rod from the carburetor, which is the bowl-shaped part midway up the left side of the Homelite's engine. Pull the rod out of the eyelet at the top of the carburetor with your hands. This will disable the governor and modify the Homelite weed eater.
