How to Remove the Ducting of a Sprinkler System

An in-ground sprinkler system works by connecting a series of sprinkler heads to underground ductwork that carries the water to the sprinkler heads. If you need to remove the sprinkler system you also need to remove the hidden ductwork a few inches under your lawn surface. Do not attempt to remove or modify your sprinkler system if you have little to no experience. One wrong move can impede the sprinkler's function and cause water flow issues.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the power at the sprinkler system control box. For added safety, turn off the circuit breaker switch for the system in your home's circuit box.

    • 2

Turn off the water supply valve leading to the sprinkler system, often located inside your basement just inside where the control box is located. Unscrew the water line that connects to the sprinkler system main duct.

    • 3

Remove the control box with a screwdriver. Loosen and disconnect the wires connected to the timer inside the box.

    • 4

Lift up all of the sprinkler heads and use a screwdriver to unscrew them from the duct pipes.

    • 5

Trace the path of the holes now left where the sprinkler heads were. Use the tip of a shovel to get under the hidden ducting and gently pry upwards to expose the ducts. You may need to dig around the ductwork a little to remove it.

Lift the ducts out of the ground and continue until all ducting is removed. You may need to use a small hack saw to cut down the ducting to make it easier to pull out of the ground.
