The chain drive on the Craftsman rear tine rototiller model 917.293201 is used to ensure the operation of the tiller's tines in tandem with the operation of the motor. Instructions

    • 1

Park the Craftsman rototiller on a level surface and turn off the machine.

    • 2

Find the drive chain, which is located atop the spring loaded idler. The idler is a circular, metal plate with a bolt at its top. Use your socket wrench to loosen the bolt by twisting it counterclockwise.

    • 3

Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the screws along the Craftsman rototiller's chain/belt guard that is positioned against the drive chain. Pull off the guard.

    • 4

Lift the drive chain off the rototiller's pulley.

    • 5

Slide the replacement drive chain into place on the pulley.

    • 6

Insert a ratchet or breaker bar into the open, square hole at the top of the idler plate. Crank the ratchet or bar clockwise to tighten the chain until you feel resistance. Stop turning immediately when you feel resistance.

    • 7

Follow your disassembly steps in reverse to finish resetting the idler plate and chain guard back into position.
