The Different Colors of Artificial Grass

Artificial grass isn't just for sports stadiums. Many manufacturers make artificial turf designed for home use, and it's available in a variety of colors to meet your needs. This grass is easy to install, is low-maintenance and doesn't need fertilizer or herbicide, which can run off into waterways or other areas of your yard. Determine your needs before settling on a color.
  1. Using Artificial Grass

    • Artificial grass helps provide the look and feel of real grass in areas where grass won't grow, such as in shady spots, or in high-traffic areas. Kids and dogs especially can wear out real grass quickly, causing brown spots or paths of no grass at all where they play. This also happens in areas where you set up child or adult activities, such as a badminton net or basketball goal. The artificial turf, which may require a decomposed granite base and weed barrier, keeps its color and eliminates the problem with bare patches while eliminating the need to mow, water or fertilize.

    Common Color

    • The most common color for artificial turf is green to mimic the look of real grass. It might seem that the choice of green is simple, but there are many shades and varieties to choose from. Go for deep green shades, choose a light green that borders on lime-green or select almost any shade in between. Some companies offer two-tone grass, which mixes a darker and lighter shade of green in the same roll of artificial turf for a more natural look when installed in your yard.

    Decorative Touches

    • Setting off areas of your yard is simple with decorative colors of artificial grass. If you love your natural grass but don't like the dirt paths created by high traffic, line just those areas with a tan, brown or brick-red color of artificial turf. This highlights pathways, making it more likely people will stay on them and off your grass, while remaining in a relatively neutral color range. This also helps define island areas of your landscaping, allowing you to set them apart from the rest of your yard with color. This is especially helpful in areas that have water features -- for example, where grass gets too much overspray and stays muddy.

    Bold and Bright

    • For more impact, go for bright color that matches your personality or helps enhance your landscaping. For example, showcase your favorite sports team by installing artificial turf in the shape and color of the team's logo as part of your landscaping design. This works on a hillside as well as on flat ground. If you have kids who want a play area, install shapes of different colors, such as a blue triangle, yellow circle and red square, around their playground equipment. When you're making a sports area in your yard, define it with thin lines of white or yellow artificial grass.
