How to Shut Off an Auto Sprinkler Master Valve

An automatic sprinkler system makes watering a lawn significantly easier. Instead of moving hoses and sprinklers each time you want to water certain areas, simply program the system to water certain sections of your lawn, choosing the watering times and durations. A master valve is an electronically controlled valve that helps control the flow of water in the sprinkler system, allowing water to reach only the zone valves when the control panel signals that it's time to begin watering. You should be able to shut off the master valve by using the sprinkler system's control panel.

Turn on your automatic sprinkler system's control panel if necessary. Some go into "sleep mode" if not activated for a long time. Each system's panel is different, but most have an "On/Off" button or require you to press any button to activate the panel. Check your sprinkler system control box user's manual for how to turn on the control box.

Find the "Master Valve" option on your control panel by turning its dial to "Master Valve" or by scrolling through choices in its electronic interface. On some systems, the master valve might be called a pump start valve. Press "Select" or a similar button to choose the "Master Valve," or "Pump Start Valve," option.
