Instructions for Water Sprinklers

Water sprinklers can save you time when it comes to maintaining a healthy, green lawn. A properly installed system will cover the entire surface of the lawn with a light spray of water. Some can even be set to turn on and off automatically at selected times. The pipe system of the sprinklers is installed under the surface of the lawn; each sprinkler head is low to the ground so that they are not very visible. This keeps a yard looking clutter free. This project does not require a professional for most steps. However, check with your local town or city government for permission to dig and access water lines. Permits and a professional may be required when working with main lines.

Instructions

    • 1

Create a diagram of your yard. The diagram should include the shape of the yard and any shrubs, trees or other objects that will need to be worked around when installing the sprinkler system. Graph paper can make drawing a diagram to scale easier.

    • 2

Draw out your sprinkler plan. The sprinkler heads should be placed so that the spread of their water spray will cover the entire surface of the grass without overlapping too much. You will also need to factor in the location of the main water connection. This can be the starting point of the sprinkler pipe system.

    • 3

Expose your main water line by digging a hole with a shovel. Use caution when digging to not puncture the line. The main water line is the pipe that connects your house to your city or town water supply. This will be larger than other water-transporting pipes in your house.

    • 4

Dig a shallow trench that will hold your pipe system. This trench should follow your drawn pipe diagram.

    • 5

Lay the sprinkler pipeline in the trenches. They should be centered and lay as flat to the ground as possible.

    • 6

Connect the sprinkler pipelines to the main water line. Slide together each pipe segment. They should all fit snugly, with the smaller end of one pipe sliding into the other. Depending on your sprinkler system, you may have to tighten the connecting bolt by turning it clockwise with an adjustable wrench or tighten the screw on a bracket by turning it clockwise with a screwdriver. A sprinkler kit will contain the necessary items to make connections between each line and to the main water line.

    • 7

Cover the sprinkler pipelines and the main water line with the dirt you removed from the trenches. Do not cover the sprinkler heads that are connected to the pipes. They will need to remain above the surface of the ground.
