Leaking in Sprinkler Backflow Valves

Backflow prevention devices are designed to keep water inside an irrigation system from running back into the main line. These devices are important safety measures that are required by code in most cities. Water inside an irrigation system comes into contact with PVC cement and other contaminants, so it's important that this water does not flow back into the main drinking water supply. When a backflow device freezes with water inside, it will usually break the internal components. This will cause a leak in the device. To fix the leak, you must replace the broken parts.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the pressure vacuum breaker. It is almost always made of brass and sits above ground near the sprinkler control box.

    • 2

Close both of the ball valves located on the side of the breaker.

    • 3

Twist off the cap on the top of the breaker to expose the internal pieces.

    • 4

Pull out the bonnet O-ring and vent assembly. These pieces are the first two pieces inside the breaker.

    • 5

Pull out the check assembly by pressing down on the retaining clip and turning the piece 90 degrees.

    • 6

Pull out the check spring and disk, which are the last two pieces inside the breaker.

    • 7

Insert the new disk and spring, and then press the spring retainer over the spring. You must press down on the spring while inserting the spring retaining clip.

    • 8

Insert a new vent and bonnet O-ring. Make sure the O-ring is seated fully inside the lip of the breaker opening.

    • 9

      Screw on the cap.

    • 10

Turn on both of the ball valves to release water into the system. The breaker will pressurize, but will almost certainly leak for a few seconds while this is happening.
