Dig around the base of the sprinkler with a shovel, removing about eight inches of dirt and making enough room on the sides so that your hand can get around the base of the sprinkler.
Grab the base of the sprinkler with your hand and twist it counterclockwise. The sprinkler sits on a plastic riser with pipe threads, so it should unscrew easily.
Run the sprinklers for 30 seconds to flush dirt from the line.
Insert the new Rain Bird impact head on the plastic riser.
Twist the new sprinkler clockwise until it's tight on the riser.
Replace the dirt around the base of the sprinkler, and run the line for a few minutes to check the performance of the new sprinkler head. You may need to adjust the pattern of the sprinkler by turning a small set screw one way or the other on the base of the nozzle.
