How to Replace a Rain Bird Impact Sprinkler

Rain Bird is a major manufacturer of impact sprinkler heads designed for large areas. Water pressure is forced through a small nozzle that is aimed directly at a metal or plastic paddle. This paddle pushes the sprinkler head in a circle and directs water onto the lawn. These sprinklers are very hardy, but are not immune to damage from a lawnmower or car. Replacing a Rain Bird impact sprinkler is relatively straightforward and requires few tools.

Instructions

    • 1

Dig around the base of the sprinkler with a shovel, removing about eight inches of dirt and making enough room on the sides so that your hand can get around the base of the sprinkler.

    • 2

Grab the base of the sprinkler with your hand and twist it counterclockwise. The sprinkler sits on a plastic riser with pipe threads, so it should unscrew easily.

    • 3

Run the sprinklers for 30 seconds to flush dirt from the line.

    • 4

Insert the new Rain Bird impact head on the plastic riser.

    • 5

Twist the new sprinkler clockwise until it's tight on the riser.

    • 6

Replace the dirt around the base of the sprinkler, and run the line for a few minutes to check the performance of the new sprinkler head. You may need to adjust the pattern of the sprinkler by turning a small set screw one way or the other on the base of the nozzle.
