How to Run a Sprinkler System Under Concrete

Laying out a sprinkler system after the house has been built presents some challenges, including how to run the sprinkler lines under concrete paths, sidewalks or driveways. To do this, you must tunnel under the concrete. Using a pressure washer is the simplest way to accomplish this delicate task. The pressure washer will use a jet of water to move dirt out of the way so that you can easily lay a pipe underground.

Instructions

    • 1

      Put on safety goggles.

    • 2

First dig a small trench about 1 foot deep at a 90-degree angle to the sidewalk or other patch of concrete to be tunneled under.

    • 3

Lay the wand of the pressure washer in the trench, with the nozzle pointed toward the concrete.

    • 4

Pull the trigger on the washer and slowly but steadily move the wand forward under the concrete. The water and dirt will jet out toward you, so be careful not to put your head directly in its path.

    • 5

Pull the wand out of the hole after it penetrates the other side of the concrete. You should have a hole that's about 2 inches in diameter.

    • 6

Insert the PVC supply line into the hole and press it firmly until it's exposed on both sides of the concrete.
