Rainbird Maxi Paw Tips

The Rain Bird Maxi Paw is an underground impact sprinkler that stays hidden until the irrigation timer sets it off. Then it rises above the ground, and behaves and functions like a typical impact sprinkler. The Maxi Paw can be adjusted to suit the needs of your lawn using different nozzles and tweaking different settings.
  1. Nozzles

    • The Maxi Paw comes with five different nozzles to help sprinklers with shorter or longer rotation ranges take up the slack when watering the lawn too quickly or not quickly enough. If a Maxi Paw is set to a quarter circle pattern, it will water its designated area a lot quicker than a Maxi Paw with a half or full circle pattern, because the half and full circle patterns take longer to rotate. The red, black, blue and yellow nozzles can produce low or high water output depending on the circle pattern with which it's matched. Proper nozzle placement allows your lawn to be watered evenly.

    Nozzle Access

    • Insert a screwdriver underneath the cover to the sprinkler and pop It up to insert a new nozzle. Slip the supplied Maxi Paw wrench down into the internal assembly and pop the assembly up. Pull it up with your hands and place the wrench so that the internal assembly is held up automatically. Hold the sprinkler arm out of the way and grasp the nozzle tab with your fingers. Turn the tab counterclockwise 1/4 turn and then pull it out. Insert the new nozzle and lock it into place by turning it clockwise until it clicks.

    Circle Patterns

    • In terms of setting the circle pattern, you can allow the Maxi Paw to rotate in a complete, continuous circle or you can set boundaries for a partial circle pattern using the trip collars and trip pin. The trip pin is located at the base of the spray head. Raise the trip pin up and out of the way of the trip collars to set the sprinkler to rotate in one direction continuously. Lower the trip pin between the trip collars and adjust the collars, which are located around the base of the spray head, to align with the boundaries of the watering area.

    Maintenance

    • The Maxi Paw is lubricated by water, so there is no need to add extra lubrication, like pipe dope, oil or grease. For complications, inspect the nozzle for blockage or buildup. If the nozzle is obstructed, remove it and clean it with air and water. Inspect the irrigation timer and valves for proper functionality. Before winter brings hard freezes, blow out the system with an air compressor, or winterize it, to prevent water from freezing inside the sprinkler system, which can cause considerable damage to the pipes and the sprinkler.
