The Effect of Fungus on Grass

When trying to maintain the appearance of your lawn, you must do battle with several destructive forces, including too little water, the neighbor's dog and weeds. You also must keep an eye out for signs of lawn fungus, which can have destructive effects on grass.
  1. Lawn Fungus

    • Diffrent types of lawn fungus vary widely in appearance. Powdery mildew on your grass makes it look as though your lawn has been sprinkled with talcum powder. Red thread fungus causes grass to look pink from a distance. Depending on where you live and what kind of grass you have planted in your yard, your lawn could be susceptible to a number of fungi. Most are irritating, and some can be difficult to get rid of.

    Damage

    • Mild lawn fungus infections mar the appearance of your grass, but do not harm it. Your lawn will have discolored patches, instead of being a beautiful even green. Over time, lawn fungus can damage your grass. When it covers the upper sides of grass blades, lawn fungus interferes with its ability to photosynthesize. The grass doesn't create enough nutrients to feed itself and the fungus feeding on it. This leads to yellow, sick-looking grass that eventually turns brown and dies.

    Solutions

    • While some broad-based fungicides are effective against lawn fungus, they are also health hazards and can be too much kill for too small of a problem. It is best to combat lawn fungus by making changes to your yard. Trim back overhanging tree branches or shrubbery; sunlight kills fungal growth. Water your lawn deeply and occasionally, rather than lightly and often. Some loose forms of lawn fungus can be raked right off the grass and disposed of in the trash.

    Considerations

    • In addition to too much watering, allowing your grass to grow too long can increase its risk of developing lawn fungus. Careful watering, regular mowing and consistent removal of thatch buildup will protect your lawn. Reducing shade from shrubs or trees in problem areas also will help water dissipate at a regular rate.
