How to Operate a Bird Sprinkler

Rain Bird sprinklers come in two forms: underground and aboveground. Underground sprinklers are installed in conjunction with several other underground units in such a way that every inch of grass is covered. While underground sprinklers are stationary, aboveground sprinklers or impact sprinklers can be spiked or installed in any way you choose. Before deciding which sprinkler to use for your home garden and lawn, you might have questions about how to adjust each Rain Bird to fit the desired watering area.

Instructions

  1. Rotor Sprinklers

    • 1

Grasp the Rain Bird turret or upper body of the sprinkler and pull it up from the base of the sprinkler. Twist it all the way to the right to complete the rotation, then turn it all the way to the left. This is the fixed left edge. It can't be adjusted, so align the left edge with the leftmost edge of the watering area.

    • 2

Insert the supplied Rain Bird adjustment tool into the adjustment socket, which is flanked by positive and negative symbols on the top of the spray head. Twist the tool to the right or clockwise to increase the arc or rotation range. Twist the tool to the left or counterclockwise to decrease the rotation range.

    • 3

Insert the supplied adjustment tool into the radius adjustment socket, which is located at the tip of the printed arrow on the Rain Bird spray head. Twist it clockwise to reduce the reach or radius of the spray by 25 percent. Twist the tool counterclockwise to restore the spray to its full capacity.

    Impact Sprinklers

    • 4

Lower the Rain Bird distance control flap, located near the top of the spray head just above the nozzle, to reduce the length of the stream and redirect it. Some models have a distance control dial instead of a flap that serves the same purpose. Twist the dial to create modifications in distance of the water stream.

    • 5

Raise the trip pin, which is a thin metal pin located on the lower part of the sprinkler, to allow the sprinkler to rotate in a continuous circle in one direction. Lower the pin to set a rotation range for the sprinkler.

    • 6

Twist the two trip collars, which are made of plastic or metal, and encircle the base of the Rain Bird. Align each with an edge of the lawn. Confirm that the trip pin is lowered between these two points.
