# How to Remove Kerosene From the Ground
Kerosene has many uses, from heating and lighting, to cooking and transportation. Also, in underdeveloped countries, kerosene is often used as a substitute for alcohol in the treatment of cuts and burns. However, do not forget, that despite its many benefits, kerosene is a highly flammable, toxic substance, and it should always be handled with care. If its handler were to spill it on the ground outside, certain measures must be taken to assure that the kerosene does not harm the environment or the people and animals in it.
Things You'll Need
- Cat litter
- Plastic gloves
- Shovel
- Container

Put on a pair of plastic gloves.

Pour cat litter over the area covered in kerosene. Use as much litter as needed to cover the contaminated area.

Allow the cat litter to absorb the liquid for up to a half an hour. The cat litter will become wet when the kerosene is properly absorbed.

Remove the litter and top layer of soil with a shovel.

Scoop the litter and soil into a container. Seal the container.

Contact the nearest waste disposal center for instructions on how to dispose of the kerosene waste. Normally you will need to bring in the waste and drop it off at the center. A waste disposal center is a facility that disposes of hazardous waste.
