How to Install Mowing Strips

A mowing strip is an edge given to a lawn to provide an aesthetic and practical purpose. Mowing strips are installed flush with the lawn surface so you can run the lawn mower over the mowing strip and not need to use an edge trimmer. Different materials can be used to make the mowing strip but the most common include stone, concrete or bricks. While installing a mowing strip yourself can be labor-intensive, when completed and installed you will have saved the costs of hiring a professional.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the size of the bricks with the tape measure. Mark the size of the bricks on the edge of your lawn where you will be installing the bricks with the spray paint. Paint the path you will be cutting with the spray paint.

    • 2

Remove the lawn and dirt with the shovel. Dig the path to the depth of the brick plus 1 inch.

    • 3

Spread a thin layer of sand over the created path. Tamp down the sand with the dirt tamp.

    • 4

Lay the brick starting from the corner of the path. Tamp the brick down in place with the end of the handle of the trowel. Finish laying the rest of the bricks until you finish the path. If you need to raise or lower a brick so it is level with the previously laid brick use the trowel to remove dirt, or to add more sand to raise the level.

    • 5

Mix the mortar mix with water in the bucket according to the directions on the packaging. The mixing directions can vary by manufacturer so it is important you read the directions for the exact mixing ratio.

    • 6

Spread a thin layer of mortar mix over the edges between each brick to secure them to each other. Let the mortar mix dry for at least 30 minutes before cleaning any excess mortar mix on the bricks with a wet sponge.
