Tree Leaf Removal

Managing a yard's fallen leaves can be quite a task once autumn arrives in full. But there many options to get rid of them - some more environmentally friendly than others. You can burn the leaves, depending whether local laws allow it, or you can turn it into compost. Check your area's regulations for leaf disposal before you decide which direction you want to go.

Instructions

  1. Rake and bag

      Rake or blow the leaves into a large pile or a series of smaller piles depending on the size of the yard and the amount of leaves you have.

      Collect all the leaves into bags. The leaves will compress a good deal, so don't be afraid to pack them in tightly.

      Set the bags out with your trash for the usual pickup. Some localities have specific pickups just for leaves, so check with your service provider beforehand.

    Burning

      Call your local fire department for leaf-burning regulations. Some areas allow trash or leaves to be burned only after a certain time of day. or may prohibit it if conditions are too dry.

      Rake or blow all the leaves into an open area away from overhanging trees or anything flammable.

      Set a large, metal barrel on top of some cinder blocks.

      Fill the barrel with leaves and set them on fire.

      Douse the embers with water once you're finished to ensure that the fire doesn't reignite.

    Compost

      Rake or blow your leaves to an area near the compost bin.

      Deposit the leaves in the bin.

      Water the bin regularly to keep it moist.

      Use a pitchfork to turn the compost every other day while mixing in new layers of leaves or other trash.

      Use the finished compost to help fertilize your lawn.
