How to Get Rid of Wild Turnips in My Yard

A wild turnip is actually a type of weed that can invade your yard rather quickly. It also happens to be a large weed, growing to height of about 3 feet. Each year this annual weed can return to your yard. There are not many options to get rid of it and control the population of wild turnips on your property. Your best option is to attack the wild turnips before they start to flower and spread their seeds.

Instructions

    • 1

Control the wild turnips as soon as you find them. These weeds can flower and spread seeds all year long, so try to get rid of them before they flower.

    • 2

Purchase a herbicide approved for use on wild weeds like turnips. A few examples include glyphosate, dicamba or an MCPA herbicide. Apply the herbicide at the ground level to help kill the root systems.

    • 3

Use a garden trowel to dig out the wild turnips. Cut out all roots beneath the ground that you can find. Digging out the roots, in combination with the herbicide, should be enough to get rid of the wild turnips in your yard.

    • 4

Mow your lawn often once the wild turnips are gone. The mower keeps weeds at bay so they never get the chance to grow to full capacity and flower again.

    • 5

Continue to apply the herbicide every year in areas where wild turnips persistently grow. This may be where older turnips were present, which can have root systems that continue to live.
