After heavy rains you may notice some tree roots being exposed above the ground. Some trees need the feeder roots, the roots that are away from the tree, to get oxygen so the tree can breathe and grow. Having the roots exposed near the trunk can be damaging to your tree and there are a couple things you can do to help prevent this from happening. Most of the items need to cover the exposed roots can be found a hardware store or nursery.

Cover the hardy tree roots near the trunk of the tree with a good quality top soil. Usually about 2 inches will do well for the roots.

Put down about 2 inches of mulch over the newly laid top soil. Fresh wood chips make for nice mulch and the tree will get the nutrients out of the fresh wood chips.

Reapply the mulch when the color begins to darken and look moldy. Older wood chips can actually hurt the tree worse than leaving the roots exposed.
