How to Avoid the Smell of Charcoal

Grilling with charcoal can add flavor to your meats. However, a dirty grill and too much lighter fluid can detract, rather than add to, the barbecue experience. In addition to regular cleaning, there are techniques you can use to keep your barbecued food from tasting too much like charcoal. These techniques can be employed with only a few supplies and without much effort or planning.

Instructions

    • 1

Lift the lid of your grill to the open position or take it off completely, if it is not a hinged top.

    • 2

Pull the grill top up and off the barbecue, and set it aside, out of the way.

    • 3

Make sure all fire is out, then scoop out the old charcoal with a small hand shovel, and discard it in a garbage bag.

    • 4

Spray the grill cooking tops with grill cleaning spray and allow it to soak for five minutes. Scrub the grill top with a wire brush, and then hose off the residue.

    • 5

Spray the inside of the grill with the cleaner, and use the steel brush to clean the inside. Scoop out any further residue with the hand shovel.

    • 6

Replace the grill top and lid.
