How to Trim Lower Evergreen Branches

Nature usually takes care of removing the bottom branches of an evergreen tree when it is left alone. Animals eat the lower branches, and the lack of light makes them die and fall off. When the tree is in your yard, however, nature can take too long. Trimming the lower branches of an evergreen tree gives you easier access for yard maintenance. It also reduces the chance that unwanted garden pests will find a safe haven in the yard. It will take at least three cuts to properly remove a bottom branch of an evergreen tree, as these limbs are usually thick. Using several cuts will prevent damage to the branch collar, the area coming out from the trunk of the evergreen around the limb.

Instructions

    • 1

Find a spot on the lower branch approximately 6 to 8 inches away from the trunk of the evergreen. Place the pruning saw beneath the limb and cut upward, sawing halfway into the branch.

    • 2

Move the saw about 2 inches further from the tree trunk. Place the saw on top of the branch and cut downward until the limb comes free from the evergreen tree.

    • 3

Make the final cut just outside the collar of the branch to remove the stub that is left after the lowest branch has been cut away. Be careful not to cut into the collar of the branch.

    • 4

Remove all of the debris from the limb removal area.
