Locate a place inside or outside the house where you want to install the Rain Bird timer. Mount the timer on a wall and locate it it near an AC outlet.
Mount the timer using the screws included with the timer. Use a drill to tighten the screws through the four mounting holes on either side of the timer box.
Open the timer panel to expose the electrical connections.
Unroll the sprinkler wiring kit so that one end is at the timer and the other reaches the irrigation control box outside. If the timer is mounted inside, you will have to drill a 3/4-inch hole through the wall to thread the wires outside.
Place the exposed end of the white wire into the position marked "negative" in the timer. This is the ground connection for all of the valves. Tighten the screw on the connection point with a screwdriver until tight.
Place one of the colored wires into each of the zone connection points. For example, place the red wire in zone one, the blue wire in zone two, etc. Tighten each of the connection points as you go. Each colored wire represents the connection of one valve, or zone, at the irrigation box.
Go to the irrigation control box outside.
Twist together each of the solenoid wires marked "negative." Twist the white wire from the wiring kit to this bundle and place a grease cap from the wiring kit onto the end of the bundle. This will give all of the valves the same ground connection.
Twist each of the positive wires on the valves to one colored wire from the wiring kit. If the red wire was installed in zone one on the timer, connect the red wire to the positive wire on the first valve. Continue twisting positive connections to each successive wire color.
Place grease caps from the wiring kit on the end of each positive connection to make the seals watertight.
Plug in the timer and set it to the "test" position to test each zone. Set the timer according to your desired watering schedule.
