How to Use a Lawn Plugger

Over time, the soil underneath your lawn can become compacted. This compression removes the small pockets in the soil that provide your lawn's root system with the oxygen it needs to live, while making it more difficult for the roots to draw nutrients and water from the ground. This can weaken your lawn, making it more susceptible to drought and disease. You can alleviate this problem with a lawn plugger (also known as a lawn aerator). This is a device which punches holes in the soil to loosen it.

Instructions

    • 1

Water the lawn with about an inch of water two days before using the lawn plugger.

    • 2

Start the plugger, following the instructions.

    • 3

Drive the plugger to the location where you are aerating the lawn.

    • 4

      Engage the plugging mechanism.

    • 5

Drive the plugger across the lawn. When you reach the end of the lawn, disengage the plugging mechanism and turn the plugger around to go over the next row.

    • 6

Continue aerating the lawn in that direction. When you have finished, make a second pass in the opposite direction. (If the first pass is east-west, make the second pass going north-south.)

    • 7

Leave the plugs on your lawn. They will break apart in about a month.
