Irrigation Sprinkler System Troubleshooting

A home irrigation system consists of underground sprinklers, water valves and a controller that enables watering at set times. After the irrigation system is properly installed, you might have problems, such overshooting sprinkler streasms, power loss, or stunted water streams. You'll want to be sure that your system functions perfectly before you leave your home for extended periods, lest your lawn will suffer. Often problematic issues can be corrected with basic maintenance, setting adjustments or simple cleaning.

Instructions

    • 1

Twist the irrigation timer dial to "Run" or "Auto," if the sprinklers fail to turn on at a set time. While the times are set, the controller must ultimately be set to "Auto" or "Run" to turn it on. Some timer models contain buttons only and no dial. If this is the case, push the button or button sequence to enable the controller.

    • 2

Push the button or twist the dial that provides access to water start time settings, if the controller is activated yet the sprinklers fail to turn on. Observe the watering start times and confirm that they are set for the desired time within the desired program on the desired day. Do this for each zone. If no water time is set, use the keypad to enter a start time for each zone and program, if necessary.

    • 3

Push the timer reset button, if the display is incorrect or blank. The controller's electricity supply might have been affected by a power surge or lightning strike. As a defense mechanism, the timer shuts down. When the reset button is pressed, the system should illuminate correctly as before. If the controller doesn't respond to the reset, contact the manufacturer. The timer might require repair or replacement.

Lower the end of the supplied spray head adjustment tool into the stem pull-up slot atop the sprinkler's spray head, if the water stream is inaccurate. The nozzle is either blocked or damaged and needs to be replaced or cleaned. Twist the tool a quarter of a turn and lift the stem. Remove the tool from the pull-up slot and insert it into the stream adjustment slot. Turn the tool to the left to release the nozzle and remove the nozzle from its slot on the side of the spray head. Clear the nozzle carefully of any debris or blockage using only air, water and your hands. If the nozzle is badly damaged, replace it with a new one and turn the tool in the stream adjustment slot to the right to lock the new nozzle in place.

Place the spray head adjustment tool into the rotation range slot, if the sprinkler waters unnecessary areas, such as the driveway or the side of your house. Turn the adjustment tool to the left to narrow the rotation reach away from the unnecessary area. If the problem side is the fixed side of the sprinkler, dig up the dirt around the sprinkler housing and turn the housing and the piping carefully, until the fixed side of the spray head is aligned with the corresponding edge of the lawn.
