Turn off the two ball valves on the sprinkler vacuum breaker. The valves are located just above the irrigation control box on the outside of the house.
Locate a sprinkler head on your system that is near the bushes that you want to water.
Dig around the sprinkler head using a hand shovel, removing at least 6 inches of dirt from around all the sides of the sprinkler body.
Place your hand around the sprinkler body and turn it counterclockwise until it pulls free from the ground.
Place an adjustable wrench around the small plastic riser in the ground, and turn it counterclockwise until it pulls free from the supply line below.
Wrap the pipe threads on the base of a new, 12-inch polyvinyl chloride, or PVC, riser with a single layer of Teflon tape. The tape will lubricate the threads of the pipe.
Place the tapped end of the pipe into the supply line hole and turn the riser clockwise until tight. Use the wrench to turn the riser another half turn.
Replace the dirt around the base of the riser.
Screw on a shrub sprinkler head onto the top of the exposed PVC riser. Turn the head clockwise until tight, but stop turning when the nozzle is snug and pointed at the bushes.
Turn on the sprinklers and turn the shrub sprinkler head so it hits the bushes at the desired angle. The tall riser will allow the water to hit the middle of the bushes, rather than the grass.
