How to Weed Zoysia Lawns

Zoysia grass is a turfgrass that can be kept extremely short compared to other grasses. You sometimes see it on golf courses as well as lawns in warmer climates due to its durability with regard to foot traffic. In many cases you can keep weeds from spreading on your lawn if you keep the grass at the shorter end of its height requirements range.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a garden spreader with a granular pre-emergent herbicide. Walk over the lawn with the spreader to cast out the chemical. Pre-emergents must be applied in early spring and in fall to stop both the summer and winter weeds that develop. Wait until the temperature is higher than 60 degrees F in the spring before spreading the granules. Choose an herbicide that is selective in the vegetation that it kills. Look on the label to ensure that zoysia isn't listed.

Water the lawn, if the package directs, to work the herbicide into the soil.

    • 3

Mow the lawn at the proper height to continuously cut off the tops of the weeds as well as maintain the grass. Cut Zoysia grass between 3/4 and 2 1/2 inches, so if you maintain the proper height, the weeds that typically go to seed do not get a chance to grow tall enough.

Walk the lawn and pull out visible broadleaf weeds by hand. Grasp around the weed low to the ground and pull up.

    • 5

Spray the lawn with a selective postemergent herbicide during the summer. You may need to do this if the pre-emergent did not keep all the weeds out, and you have too many weeds to pull out by hand. Remember to read the labels as you select the herbicide. Wait 7 to 10 days, and then reapply the herbicide if needed. With some weeds like chickweed or crabgrass, you will need multiple applications.
