Test the soil. Soil testing services are commonly available from county extension offices. Follow the directions for collecting soil and returning the samples for testing. The tests will indicate the number of pounds of lime to apply per acre. An acre equals 43,560 square feet. Calculating the amount of lime for a 1,000 square foot area is often best for lawn applications.
Use a spreader calibrated for the proper rate of application. Spread the hydrated lime as evenly as possible across the lawn or field. Avoid wet conditions especially if using heavy equipment that may cause ruts or get stuck in the field. Don't spread lime when the grass is frosty as the lime will stick to the plant leaves.
Apply water to the lawn after applying the hydrated lime. This washes any lime that may have stuck to the blades of grass down into the top soil.
