How to Level a Dip in the Lawn

Dips or depressions can appear in your lawn due to soil erosion or the ground settling. While in most cases, this is a minor problem, problems can arise if the dip grows large enough. Water can pool in the dip, which can kill the grass or provide a place for mosquitoes to breed. It can also be more difficult to mow the lawn. A dip in the yard can even lead to injury if someone steps in it and twists an ankle or wrenches a knee. Leveling it out is an easy project for a homeowner.

Instructions

    • 1

Mix sand and topsoil together in a 50-50 mix.

Cover the dip with the sand and topsoil mix. Spread it out by hand in a layer 1/2 inch deep, then rake it with a landscaping rake to spread it further. The mix should not bury any grass blades.

Water the sand and topsoil mix until it is soaked.

    • 4

Repeat this procedure once every four to six weeks until the dip is filled.
