How to Mow Grass That Is Too Long

Lawns get overgrown for many reasons. An illness or injury might keep you from maintaining it or you might be called away for an extended period and return to long grass. Sometimes when someone buys a home the lawn hasn't been taken care of. Whatever the reason, there is a method to cutting long grass that helps ensure its health.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut your lawn when it is dry. When you're cutting long grass, it will be less slippery and less likely to clump if it's dry.

    • 2

Cut the lawn with the mower at the highest setting. Grass has crowns, which are the part that supports its growth. If you cut off the crowns by mowing the lawn too low at first, the lawn will die. Mow slowly, which will help your mower navigate the long grass.

    • 3

Wait a few days after the first cutting and mow the lawn at the next lowest setting on the mower. The crowns of the grass will naturally move lower with each cutting.

    • 4

Do not cut the grass lower if you notice it starting to brown. Instead keep it mowed to the same height and continue watering until the grass greens again and the crown is restored.

    • 5

Continue mowing at lower settings every few days until the lawn is at the height you desire. Rather than leave cuttings to mulch, bag them for disposal. When the grass is especially long, the cuttings may slow down your mower.
