How to Disassemble a Hunter I-20 Sprinkler Head

Hunter Industries is a major manufacturer of residential and commercial irrigation equipment. The I-20 rotary sprinkler manufactured by Hunter features a heavy-duty commercial-grade rotor and more than 20 interchangeable nozzle choices. The I-20 uses water pressure to rotate the head up to 260 degrees and can cover a radius of from 17 to 47 feet, according to Hunter specifications. Two of the parts on the I-20 are designed to be disassembled. Both the nozzle and the main spring can easily be removed for maintenance or repair.

Instructions

  1. Removing the Nozzle

    • 1

Insert the plastic key that came with the equipment into the lifting socket of the sprinkler.

    • 2

Turn the key 90 degrees clockwise, and pull up the riser.

    • 3

Insert the hex end of the Hunter key into the radius adjustment screw on the top of the sprinkler head.

    • 4

Turn the key counterclockwise, and slowly pull out the adjustment screw. Either turn on the water or pull on the nozzle post with a pair of needle-nose pliers to remove the nozzle. This is as far as you can disassemble the sprinkler head.

    Remove the Main Spring

    • 5

Remove any dirt from around the body retaining nut, which is the black ring at the base of the nozzle.

    • 6

Turn the nut counterclockwise until it pulls free from the sprinkler body.

    • 7

Pull up on the sprinkler head assembly to remove the internal spring from the sprinkler shell.
