Scott's Steps on Fertilizing Your Lawn

The Scotts company produces a widely available line of lawn care products, including weed prevention and fertilizer products. The Lawn Pro Steps system consists of four products to be applied in succession from the spring through the fall. Each product contains a different fertilizer formulation optimized for use at a specific time during the year. The fertilizer formulations are presented as three numbers separated by dashes, indicating nitrogen, phosphate (phosphorus) and potash (potassium) content.
  1. Step 1: Crabgrass Preventer Plus Fertilizer

    • Scotts Lawn Pro Step 1 Crabgrass Preventer Plus Fertilizer is designed for use at the beginning of the spring, in the months of February through April, depending on your area. The Step 1 formulation is used to prevent crabgrass from growing within the lawn, and it also contains a 26-0-3 fertilizer that's ideal for springtime feeding of the lawn. Step 1 in the Scotts Lawn Pro series is not suitable for use on bentgrass and dichondra turf.

Step 2: Weed Control Plus Fertilizer

    • The second step in the Lawn Pro series is Scotts Weed Control Plus Fertilizer. Step 2 is designed to attack broadleaf weeds such as dandelions in the lawn, but it is not suitable for use on bentgrass, dichondra, centipedegrass or St. Augustine grass turfs. The Step 2 formulation contains a 28-0-6 fertilizer to feed lawns in the late spring. Weed Control Plus Fertilizer should be applied during the months of April through June.

    Step 3: Lawn Fertilizer

    • Scotts Lawn Pro Step 3 Lawn Fertilizer provides lawns with a boost of fertilizer to aid in the absorption of nutrients and water and to help prevent damage from summertime drought conditions. Applied in the months of June through August, the lawn fertilizer is a 32-0-4 formulation suitable for use on all species of turf.

    Step 4: Lawn Fertilizer

    • Step 4 in the Lawn Pro Series is Scotts Lawn Fertilizer. Optimized for fall feeding, this 32-0-12 formulation encourages roots to grow deeply and densely, providing a strong foundation for next spring's lawn. The Step 4 fertilizer should be applied during the fall and does not need watering after application. Although Step 4 is suitable for all turf types, it can burn ornamental plants.
