How to Program a Rain Bird Sprinkler System

A Rain Bird sprinkler system runs on a set schedule as administered by its connected controller or timer. You can program the timer to modify such aspects as watering days, watering times and watering duration times for each zone of the yard. You can adjust the underground sprinklers -- which pop up and water the lawn when their connected water valves open -- to modify their rotation ranges and throw. After the system is installed, you might have questions about how to fine-tune it to suit the watering needs of your yard.

Instructions

  1. Controller

    • 1

Move the program switch on the front panel of the Rain Bird controller to "A" or "B." Some controllers have more programs. These programs allow you to make different schedules for one or all of the water valve zones in the yard. The program letter appears on the display screen. Any settings made are applied to the selected program.

    • 2

Twist the Rain Bird controller dial, located on the front panel, to "Watering Start Times." The current watering start times for the selected program appear on the display. Push the "Up" or "Down" button to adjust the start time. The start time is the time of day the yard is to be watered. You can adjust more than one watering start time. Press "Manual Start/Advance" to set the next start time.

    • 3

Twist the dial to "Advanced Cycles" to select a watering cycle. Press the "Up" or "Down" button to choose from "Custom," which runs on selected days of the week; "Odd," which runs on odd days of the week; "Even," which runs on even days of the week; or "Cyclic," which runs on a chosen interval, such as every fourth day.

    • 4

Twist the controller dial to the water valve number for which you want to set valve run times. The selected valve's run time appears on the display. The run time is the duration of the watering cycle. Push the "Up" or "Down" button to select the duration time, then twist the dial to the next valve number.

    • 5

Turn the dial to "Auto" to activate the schedule. The controller then sends signals to the water valves to open and water the lawn on the selected days and times.

    Sprinklers

    • 6

Grasp the rotary sprinkler housing with one hand and the turret with the other before installation, preferably, and twist the turret completely to left. Turn the turret back completely to the right. The right is the fixed edge and can't be adjusted, so align the fixed right edge of the sprinkler with the right edge of its designated watering area upon installation.

    • 7

Insert the tool that came with the sprinkler housing into the adjustment hole, which is on top of the spray head. Turn the tool clockwise or to the right to widen the rotation range. Twist it counterclockwise or to the left to narrow the rotation range.

    • 8

Insert the tool into the radius adjustment hole on the top of the spray head and twist it clockwise or to the right to shorten the throw. Twist it counterclockwise to restore the throw to its full reach.
