Sprinkler Controller Help

A residential sprinkler controller keeps the yard on a tight schedule in regards to watering times. Wiring from the controller is connected to the water valve manifold. When watering time comes, the controller opens the valves and the sprinklers pop up to water the lawn. After installation, you might need to fix a problem or two with controller scheduling.
  1. Inactive Controller

    • If the system doesn't seem to run, check that the dial or controller is set to "Auto" or "Run." All schedule settings might be programmed, but they aren't truly activated until the controller is set to "Auto." If the controller is set to "Run," a start time might not have been set and saved. Twist the controller dial to "Set Watering Times." If no time appears, enter a start time. Set start times for each program or zone, and confirm that the current day and time and desired watering days are set correctly.

    Valve Doesn't Open

    • When the valve fails to open, the run time or watering duration time probably isn't set for that particular valve, which can be remedied by twisting the controller dial to the desired valve. A run time should appear. If the run time is blank, use the up and down buttons to set a duration time. If an alarm light is illuminated or "Error" appears on the controller display, there might be a problem with the valve solenoid wiring. Disconnect the controller from its power source, and locate and fix the wiring issue, which might require an irrigation wire replacement.

    Blank Display

    • If the display is blank, there might have been an electrical disturbance, such as lightning, which knocked the controller offline. Locate the "Reset" button on the controller, which is usually a very tiny inverted button that can only be reached with a skinny object, such as a pen tip or a paper clip end. Insert the item into the "Reset" slot, and press the button until the display indicates that the controller has been reset. If permanent electrical damage has been done, you might need to contact the manufacturer for assistance.

    Unscheduled Watering

    • When the system is watering when it shouldn't, the manual override key might have been pressed. Usually the controller has a button, which allows you to activate the sprinkler at any time. The system can be turned off from such activation by turning the dial to the "Off" position for a moment and then setting it back to "Run." If the problem persists, check the watering start times for an unwanted scheduled time and delete it.
