How to Mow a Steep Ditch

Grass growing in ditches along the side of the road or home can quickly get out of control if it's not mowed regularly. Unfortunately, most ditches are very steep and difficult to mow properly. Using a push mower in conjunction with a weed trimmer can reduce the chance of injury when mowing steep ditches. Operating the mower properly is essential to prevent the machine from tipping over, which can cause damage to you and the machine.

Instructions

    • 1

Push a mower up and down the ditch to determine how easy it is to maneuver. Use the push mower only if you can keep your grip on the machine and keep from slipping.

    • 2

      Start the push mower.

    • 3

Walk the push mower up and down the hill. Do not mow horizontally along the hill since you may slip or the machine may tilt over.

    • 4

Stop the mower every few passes. Unplug the spark plug by pulling on the connector. Check the underside of the machine for clogging from grass. Remove excess grass by hand. Grass in ditches is often very wet and tends to clump.

    • 5

Start a grass trimmer. Stand on the ditch so that you have firm footing and swing the grass trimmer from side to side to remove the remainder of the grass in the ditch.
