Certain tall, thick grasses are particularly competitive against weed establishment. Red clover, which is grown as a foraging crop, puts up a better fight against thick grasses compared with other clovers. Thick and tall grass that shades the soil prevents many weeds from establishing.
Cultural practices are a safer alternative to herbicides if you are trying to eliminate clover from your lawn. By maintaining dense and vigorously-growing turf grasses, clover will have a more difficult time establishing.
Sometimes clover and other legume seeds are mixed into existing grass sod to improve their pasture yield and quality, while providing nitrogen. This is often done with Kentucky bluegrass sod because it is less vigorous. Red clover can be interseeded with taller grasses because it grows vigorously, as high as 18 inches.
