How to Remove a Stump & How Long Does it Take

A stump can be removed using heavy duty, professional-grade equipment. However, this is not a practical option for many homeowners, and in some areas, you may need special qualifications to operate the machinery. You could also hire a professional to remove the stump, but the added expense is not necessary. An almost labor-free and cost-effective way to remove the stump is to use a stump remover chemical. You'll need to spend about an hour at the beginning and end of the process, but you'll need to wait a month or more in between as the chemical breaks down and decomposes the stump.

  Attach a 1-inch spade bit with spade bit extension to your electric drill.

  Drill holes through the top of the stump. Each hole should be about 3 to 4 inches from the rim of the stump and about 12 inches deep. Use a 45-degree angle as you drill, and make the holes close enough that you can connect them inside the stump.

  Fill each hole you drilled partly with a stump remover chemical. About 3 to 4 oz. in each hole should be plenty.

  Fill the holes to the brim with water using a watering can. So far, the process of removing the stump will have taken less than an hour.

  Wait four to six weeks for the stump remover chemical to work. It will decompose the stump and make it soft and spongy. This is the longest part of the process.

  Break apart the decomposed stump using a wood ax. Wear heavy work gloves when picking up the spongy pieces and disposing of them. This process could take about an hour, depending on how spongy the wood is and how fast you can cut.
