Scotts Turf Builder Ingredients

Scotts Turf Builder is a synthetic chemical fertilizer product used to feed grass and encourage deep root growth. It is broadcast over the lawn with a rotary or drop spreader. It is not recommended for use as a fertilizer for ornamental plants or vegetables. The label contains warnings about possible burning effects on these types of plants. Scotts Turf Builder contains ammonium nitrate as its main ingredient, as indicated by its NPK label of 32-2-8. The individual chemical ingredient adjuvants are not listed on the product package. They are trademarked under the name "Water Smart."
  1. Active Chemical Compounds

    • Urea (reclaimed animal urine), manganese oxide, ammonium phosphate, potassium sulfate, ferrous sulfate, ammonium sulfate, manganese sulfate anyhydrous and "nuisance dust" are the manufacturer-listed ingredients of Scotts Turf Builder. Its active chemical compound pesticide ingredients are 2,4-D and MCPP. These are chemicals listed as Class 111 "slightly toxic" by the Pesticide Information Network. MCPP is a potential carcinogenic and groundwater contaminant.

    Phenoxy acid Herbicides

    • Scotts Turf Builder with Plus 2 Weed Control contains the chemical compound 2, 4-D, a phenoxy acid pesticide. It has a toxicity rating of Class II, "moderately hazardous". The manufacturer's warning label includes possible respiratory tract irritations and asthma aggravation. Users are cautioned to avoid contact with skin, eyes and clothing. Artificial respiration is recommended if inhalation of the product disrupts breathing.

    Inert Ingredients

    • The EPA requires the manufacturers of the Scotts Turf Builder line of products to list the percentage of the active ingredients that destroy, prevent, repel pests or weeds. Inert or "other ingredients" are known as adjuvants. They are added to facilitate storage, handling, application or effectiveness of the product. "Water Smart" are the trademarked adjuvants in Scotts Turf Builder. Adjuvant chemical compounds are not regulated by the EPA as active ingredients are. Adjuvants can "contribute substantially to the hazards of the product," according to Texas A &M's Pesticide Education Program and the Washington Toxics Coalition.

    Label Warnings

    • Prolonged exposure (1 to 3 years) to ingredients in Scotts Turf Builder "has been reported to cause damage to the central nervous system," according to the manufacturer's product Materials Safety Data Sheet. Inhalation of the product may aggravate asthma, cause shortness of breath or other respiratory problems. Contact with eyes may produce temporary corneal opacity, tearing, irritation and blinking. Inert ingredients are not listed and their toxicity is not rated.
