How to Troubleshoot the Tanaka Trimmer Model TBC-220

Tanaka is a Japanese company that has operated in the U.S. since the 1970s, making a variety of products such as leaf blowers, drills, water pumps and trimmers. The Tanaka TBC-220 is a straight shaft trimmer that uses a rotating blade to cut away long grass and brush, and to remove longer grass from those spots your mower can't reach. You can usually troubleshoot minor issues that may occur with the motor or cutting blades before taking the trimmer in for service.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the cover for the air filter and rinse it in soapy, warm water, then dry it well before replacing it in the trimmer if the engine lacks power. Replace the filter if it is difficult to remove the dirt.

    • 2

Drain the fuel from the tank and pull out the fuel filter line if the trimmer won't start or the engine is running rough. Rinse the filter off in warm, soapy water and then clean water until all the soap has been removed. Squeeze the excess water out, replace the fuel filter and refill the tank with fuel.

    • 3

Replace the cutting blade or have the old one sharpened if the trimmer is cutting unevenly. Discard the old blade and replace if it is warped or damaged in any way.

    • 4

Add fuel to the tank if it is low or replace the spark plug with a new one if the engine won't start when you try.
