How to Tie Into an Existing Sprinkler System

Shut off the ball valves located on the main water line or on the sprinkler vacuum breaker. This will ensure no water is flowing when you cut into the main line.

Dig around the area of the supply line where you want to tie into the existing system. If you are not sure where the pipe is buried, dig around a sprinkler head until you see the supply line then follow the line out to the desired installation location. Clear away enough dirt so that your hand can easily reach around the pipe.

Measure out a space along the pipe that is 3 inches long, marking both ends with a permanent marker.

Cut along both lines with a PVC saw to remove the 3-inch section of pipe. This is where you will tie into the line.

Apply a thin layer of PVC cement to the inside of all three sides of a PVC T-fitting.

Press one end of the parallel ends of the T-fitting onto one side of the cut main line. Gently pull up on the adapter and the other end of the cut main line so that you can slide the other end of the T-fitting into the other side of the cut pipe. Release both ends to push the adapter into place. The adapter should now connect the two ends of the supply line that you previously cut.

Press a new section of PVC pipe into the third opening on the T-fitting, making sure the pipe is pointing in the direction that you want to run the new line to. Firmly hold the pipe in the adapter for 30 seconds while the cement sets up. The pipe is now ready for extensions, a sprinkler head or other fittings, as needed, for the new zone.
