When Do You Cover the Ditches in the Installation of Lawn Sprinklers?

Irrigation ditch digging is the first step toward installing a lawn irrigation system after the system is planned and drawn up. With the required parts laid out beside the ditches, you might have questions about when to cover each portion of the system. While it might prove helpful if all irrigation ditches were covered after the system is completely installed and tested, your schedule might call for the installation to be completed in segments.
  1. Irrigation Line

    • The main irrigation line stems from the main water line to the valve manifold. During installation of an irrigation system, the irrigation line must be installed from the main water line with pipe, primer and glue. A separate irrigation valve must be installed somewhere along the irrigation line in order to cut off water flow to the irrigation line, should you need to, without shutting off the main line. When an irrigation controller is installed within the system, the irrigation wire runs along the main irrigation line to the valve manifold. After the wire is secured to the pipeline, and the main irrigation line is connected to the valve manifold, the main irrigation line ditch can be filled.

    Valve Manifold

    • The valve manifold is covered by a valve manifold box, which keeps debris and dirt away from the inner workings of the valves and allows easy access for valve maintenance. The valve manifold is connected to the main irrigation line and the outgoing pipes that lead to the sprinklers. After the valve manifold is put together, connected to the main irrigation line, connected to the outgoing sprinkler pipes and covered by the valve manifold box, you can fill the ditch around the box.

    Pipes

    • Each irrigation pipe must be connected together with fittings, PVC primer and PVC glue. Once all the pipes are connected, the sprinklers must be installed before the pipe ditches can be filled with dirt.

    Sprinklers

    • Sprinkler housings are mounted onto the swing-pipe assemblies, which are attached to the installed irrigation pipe fittings. After the sprinklers are installed, the irrigation ditches can be filled with dirt. Confirm that the sprinkler housings are buried in the ground at a right angle from the ground. Do not bury the spray heads; instead, keep the spray heads slightly above the ground, and confirm that they're level with the ground.
