How to Install an Irritrol Sprinkler

Irritrol rotary sprinklers are used in irrigation systems to water the lawn when the connected water valve opens. Once the water valve is activated, water rushes through the valve and into the sprinkler housings. The sprinkler heads pop up and waters the lawn. As an example, think about connecting Irritrol sprinklers to PVC pipes and fittings, as opposed to steel or copper pipes and fittings. Once you've planned your system, accumulated the necessary pipes and fittings for the job and installed the pipes and valve manifolds within the dug trenches, you might have questions about how to install the sprinkler housings.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Sand down the ends of the PVC pipes with sandpaper in the area where you plan to insert the Irritrol sprinklers during the irrigation system installation process. Eliminate rough edges and ends to avoid leaks. You want the pipe connections to be as seamless as possible.

    • 2

Wipe the inside of the two slip-ends of the T-fitting with PVC primer and let it dry. Wipe the two PVC pipes with PVC primer and let them dry.

    • 3

Wipe the inside of the slip-ends of the T-fitting and the PVC pipe ends with PVC glue. Slide the PVC pipes and the T-fitting together, leaving the 90-degree T-fitting opening vacant. Twist the pipe a quarter turn into each end of the T-fitting to further settle them into place. Hold these pieces together for about 15 seconds, until the glue dries.

    • 4

Wrap Teflon tape in the direction of the threads around the small threaded end of a swing pipe assembly. Screw the small end of the assembly into the 90-degree T-fitting opening and tighten it by hand.

    • 5

Wrap Teflon tape around the large end of the swing pipe assembly and screw the bottom of the Irritrol sprinkler housing onto the larger end of the swing pipe assembly. Tighten the sprinkler onto the swing pipe assembly by hand.

    • 6

Repeat Steps 1 through 5 for all sprinklers, until you have installed every planned sprinkler in the yard.

    • 7

Fill all of the irrigation trenches with dirt after the installation. Confirm that each sprinkler is buried vertically in the ground and that each sprinkler head is slightly above and completely level to the ground.

    • 8

Twist the spray heads off of the Irritrol sprinkler housings. Turn the water on to the irrigation line. Open the valves manually by twisting open the valve solenoid and allow water to flow through the sprinklers to flush out any debris that might have accumulated in the pipes during installation.
