How to Put an Upper Deck Belt on a Yard-Man

The upper belt, also referred to as the rear belt drive in the operator's manual, controls the transmission of your Yard-Man lawn mower. The front belt or lower belt, attaches to the "power take off," or PTO, pulley and the mower deck. The upper belt attaches to the mower deck and then to the transmission. Just as the PTO or lower belt wears out and dry rots, the upper belt also dry rots over time. When this happens, you must replace the belt with a new one.

Instructions

    • 1

Unscrew the parking brake knob by turning the knob counterclockwise on the lever.

    • 2

Remove the screws that secure the transmission cover onto the mower's housing and then slide the cover up and off the parking brake lever.

    • 3

Locate the variable speed pulley next to the transmission. It mounts to a triangular-shaped mounting bracket, which has a long spring connected to it. Pull the cotter pin and washer off the speed selector rods that connects to the pulley and then pull the pulley off the 3/8-inch pin on which it mounts.

    • 4

Locate the engine pulley belt guard mounted directly under the engine and then slide it away from the engine pulley.

    • 5

Place the clutch-brake pedal into the parked position.

    • 6

Push the variable speed pulley forward by hand and then slip the belt off the engine pulley, release the clutch-brake pedal and then remove the belt off the variable speed pulley.

    • 7

Place the new belt onto the variable speed pulley, place the clutch-brake pedal into the parked position, push the variable speed pulley forward and place the new belt onto the pulley.

    • 8

Slide the engine pulley guard into place and then secure the speed selector rod to the variable speed pulley with the cotter pin.

    • 9

Place the transmission cover onto the housing and secure it. Thread the parking brake knob onto the lever.
