How to Attach an In Ground Sprinkler Line

Sprinkler lines deliver water to multiple sprinkler heads, where the water is ejected through small nozzles and onto the lawn. These in-ground lines are typically made out of PVC poly pipe, which is an extremely durable material. The lines must be attached to each valve on the sprinkler manifold. Once a line is secured to a valve, the sprinkler timer controls the flow of water from the main line to the individual sprinkler lines that are buried underground.

Things You'll Need

  • Sprinkler poly pipe
  • Sprinkler valves with barb outlet
  • Worm-drive clamp

Instructions

    • 1

Identify the valve that you want to connect to the in-ground supply line. If you attach the line to the first valve, for example, that line will be controlled by zone No. 1 on the timer. Otherwise, it does not matter which valve you connect to.

    • 2

Pull the supply line over the barbed end of the sprinkler valve outlet. The barb protrudes from the side or bottom of the valve and is designed to sit tightly inside the supply line. Push the supply line firmly onto the barb until the barb is covered with the pipe.

    • 3

Place a worm-drive clamp over the hose in the middle of the barb.

    • 4

Tighten the clamp by turning the screw with a screwdriver until the clamp is very tight against the hose. This will ensure a watertight connection.

    • 5

Bury the supply line under at least 6 inches of dirt to properly insulate the line.
