How to Repair an Underground Sprinkler Drain

Nearly all sprinkler systems contain a drain valve at the end of the line. This valve is designed to allow easy access to the supply line for winterizing. Releasing the valve at the end of the fall watering season to drain as much water as possible from the supply lines is important. Water that's allowed to remain in a sprinkler line can freeze and expand inside the pipes, breaking the pipes and causing significant damage to the sprinkler line. If the drain valve is damaged, replace it for proper operation.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the sprinkler water supply by turning the ball valve on the pressure vacuum breaker 90-degrees counterclockwise. The breaker is located above the sprinkler manifold box.

    • 2

Clear dirt away from the drain valve if the valve is located underground. If the valve is located inside a small irrigation control box, remove the lid by pulling up on either end.

    • 3

Cut off the end of the pipe at the base of the drain valve using a hacksaw. Pull the valve away and discard. Water will rush from the pipe until the line is fully discharged.

    • 4

Apply a thin layer of PVC cement to the inside of a new PVC drain valve and press the valve onto the end of the cut pipe. Hold the piece in place for 30 seconds while the cement sets.

    • 5

Leave the valve alone for 24 hours to allow the cement to cure.

    • 6

Recharge the sprinkler line after 24 hours by turning the ball valve on the vacuum breaker 90-degrees clockwise. Run the sprinklers as normal.
