How to Install a Sprinkler Pipe Drain

Sprinkler systems that contain water in the winter can freeze and lead to damaged pipes and other equipment. Adding a drain valve to the end of the sprinkler lines will allow you to remove as much water as possible from the lines each season before they freeze and burst. A pipe drain can be added to any sprinkler system made out of PVC pipe. The process for installing a valve requires only a few tools, and a basic knowledge of plumbing connections.

Things You'll Need

  • Hack saw

Instructions

    • 1

Clear any dirt away from the end of the sprinkler line. The end of the line is located just past the sprinkler that is furthest away from the manifold box.

    • 2

Turn off the water to the sprinklers by turning the ball valve on the pressure vacuum breaker 90 degrees counterclockwise.

    • 3

Saw off the very end of the sprinkler supply pipe that protrudes just past the last sprinkler on the system. Water will rush out as you saw.

    • 4

Scoop out any water that has pooled around the cut end of the pipe using a bucket.

    • 5

Apply a thin layer of PVC primer and cement around the inside of a sprinkler drain valve adapter, and press the adapter firmly onto the end of the cut pipe. Hold the adapter in place for 30 seconds while the cement sets.

    • 6

Leave the adapter to cure for at least 12 hours.

    • 7

Replace the dirt around the new drain valve, and turn the vacuum breaker ball valve 90 degrees clockwise to recharge the sprinkler lines. When it's time to winterize your sprinklers, uncover the drain valve and pull out the plug to remove water from the sprinkler lines and prevent freezing.
