How to Adjust a Snapper Riding Mower

Before the start of every mowing season, you must adjust your Snapper riding mower deck to ensure it cuts level. It is not hard to force a mower deck out of alignment by hitting a stump in the ground or by bottoming out on small grades. If your deck needs adjustment, your rows will look lopsided when you cut your grass. Adjustment is not difficult and does not require a trip to an authorized Snapper service center.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Drive your Snapper riding mower onto level ground, such as a concrete pad, and then set the parking brake. Check the tire pressure in each tire with a pressure gauge and then add air if needed with a tire pump. The required tire pressure is printed on the sidewall of the tire.

    • 2

Rotate the blades on the mower deck so the tips of the blade face the right and left sides of the mower deck. Measure the distance between the bottom edge of the blade and ground on each end of the blade. If one side is higher or lower than the other side by more than 1/8-inch, you must adjust the mower deck.

    • 3

Locate the vertical bracket on the left rear of the mower deck. The bracket attaches to a small chain. If you locate the bracket, the mower deck uses an eccentric adjustment nut for adjusting the side-to-side levelness of your mower deck. If the mower does not have the vertical bar, it uses J-hooks for leveling the deck.

    • 4

Loosen the outside nut on the eccentric nut setup with a wrench. Manually lift the mower deck up until it rests level and then tighten the outside nut. If you have J-hooks, loosen the locknut on the J-hook and manually lift up the deck until level and then tighten the locknut again.

    • 5

Check the measurement at each end of the blade and make any necessary adjustments.

    • 6

Rotate the blades manually until they go from front to back. Measure the distance between the bottom of the blade and the ground at the front of the mower deck and then do the same at the rear of the mower deck. The front of the mower blade should rest 1/4-inch lower than the rear of the mower deck. If it is out of tolerance, you must adjust the deck

Locate the threaded bar protruding from the back of the mower deck and then turn the nut on the threaded bar clockwise or counterclockwise to raise or lower the back of the deck until the front of the deck rests 1/4-inch lower than the back.
