How to Avoid Urine Spots in Your Yard

Whether you have a dog of your own or you are on a main dog-walking route, you may notice dead spots in your yard. These dead spots may be the result of dog urine. These spots are most often caused by female dogs that tend to squat on various areas on the lawn to urinate. The dead spots in your yard have a negative effect on the way your lawn looks and the curb appeal of your home.

Instructions

    • 1

Put up a fence to help keep neighborhood dogs from using your yard as a place to urinate as they walk by. If you do not want to put up a fence, speak with neighbors who let their dogs run loose and ask them to keep their pets out of your yard.

    • 2

Take your dog for a walk so that it urinates somewhere other than in your yard. This helps reduce the amount of urine in your yard, thus reducing the number of dead spots in your yard.

    • 3

Limit the area to which your dog has access by creating a fenced-in kennel area. This area may have dead spots, but the rest of your yard will stay looking nice.

    • 4

Train your dog to use a specific area of your yard to urinate. Lay down gravel or another ground cover, and encourage your dog to use that area.

    • 5

Watch where your dog urinates, and douse the area with water from the hose. This dilutes the urine and reduces the acidity that kills the grass.

    • 6

Encourage your dog to drink more water. Keeping the dog well-hydrated dilutes the urine and reduces the concentration of nitrates, which kill the grass.
