How to Replace the Anti-Siphon Valve in a Lawn Genie

Lawn Genie sprinkler systems require anti-siphon valves to prevent the possibility of contaminated water being drawn back into the water supply lines if water pressure on the supply side decreases. The Lawn Genie anti-siphon valve includes an electrically operated solenoid which opens and closes the water flow valve. The solenoid receives its power from a timer which is preset for designated times of watering. You can replace the anti-siphon valve with the proper tools, materials and basic plumbing and electrical wiring know-how.

Things You'll Need

  • Voltage tester
  • Pipe sealing tape
  • Adjustable wrench
  • Waterproof wire connectors

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the electrical power to the sprinkler system timer.

    • 2

Turn off the water supply to the anti-siphon valve.

    • 3

Remove the waterproof electrical connectors from the anti-siphon valve solenoid wires. The solenoid is located on top of the valve and is cylindrical in shape. Turn the connectors counterclockwise.

    • 4

Test the wires to ensure no power exists using a voltage tester. Place one probe of the tester to either wire and the other probe on the remaining wire to perform the test.

    • 5

Separate the solenoid wires from the timer wires by hand.

    • 6

Turn the 3/4-inch pipe fittings below the anti-siphon valve counterclockwise with an adjustable wrench. Once the two fittings are removed from the threads of the male ends, raise the anti-siphon device from the pipes.

    • 7

Wrap the threads of the 3/4-inch inlet and outlet pipes with pipe sealing tape. Overlap the tape approximately 50 percent while winding clockwise.

    • 8

Connect the two pipes to the anti-siphon valve. Tighten the connections clockwise with the adjustable wrench.

    • 9

Connect either wire from the valve solenoid to one of the two wires from the sprinkler system timer. A new waterproof connector must be used. Tighten the connector clockwise by hand.

    • 10

Connect the remaining wires together. Secure the wires with a waterproof connector.

    • 11

      Restore the electrical power.

    • 12

Open the water supply valve and check the fittings on the anti-siphon valve for leaks.

    • 13

Reset the Lawn Genie timer to the desired times for watering.
