Spot Applicator for Lawn Weeds

Garden sprayers are used as spot applicators for the eradication of all types of lawn weeds. Understanding weeds, sprayers and weed killers is essential to successful lawn care. Weeds are grassy or broadleaf, annual or perennial. Sprayers are handheld, hose-end or backpack-style. Weed killers are synthetic chemical compounds or nontoxic sprays.
  1. Handheld Sprayers

    • Handheld compression sprayers hold from 1 qrt. to several gallons of liquid. Liquid is forced through the applicator nozzle by compressed air. The spot applicator nozzle is on the end of a wand that is easily aimed at weed spots in the lawn. The nozzle tips are set to provide a mist of liquid material or a jet stream directly at one area. Pressure is maintained in the tank by a hand pump. Anticlog filters are standard on most compression pump sprayers.

    Backpack Spot Applicator

    • Backpack spot applicators also function with a hand pump to maintain spray pressure. Many products have a large opening for easy filling and a filter basket. Backpack units are lightweight, with a lower back brace and padded shoulder straps for easy maneuverability while spraying. Tank capacity varies from 2 to 4 gallons. Nozzles range from a fan-shape spray to a directed steady jet of liquid.

    Hose-end Sprayer

    • Spot application for lawn weeds is easily done with a hose-end, jar-type sprayer. Hose-end sprayers have a dial to calibrate the amount of spray delivered. The nozzle is set for mist, fan or directed spray. Sprayers with a premixed weed killer product are for one-time-only use. Other products provide the amount of weed killer pesticide to mix per gallon of water in the spray jar.

    Caution

    • All sprayer spot applicators carry the caution to rinse and clean them well after each use. Sprayers used as spot applicators for weed control products should not be used with fertilizers. Do not pour leftover weed killer into the gutter. Mix only the amount needed. Read the label thoroughly on all pesticide products before use.
