How to Fertilize Bentgrass

Out of more than 100 species of bentgrass, only four are commonly grown, according to turfgrass specialists with Texas A&M University. A cool season grass, the ideal climate for bentgrass is that found in the Pacific Northwest and New England. The time and expense required to maintain bentgrass makes it undesirable in the home landscape, and it is used primarily on golf course putting greens. Aside from the grasses' frequent mowing requirement, it needs more water, aerating, dethatching and fertilizing than other types of turfgrasses.

Wait until mid-spring to make the season's first nitrogen application. At that time, use 1/2 lb. of nitrogen fertilizer per 1,000 square feet.

    • 2

Reapply fertilizer in mid-July, using an organic 5-2-0 or similar analysis at 1/4 lb. per 1,000 square feet. Repeat the application at two-week intervals through mid-August.

    • 3

Winterize the bentgrass lawn with 1 lb. of urea per 1,000 square feet applied in late November or early December.

    • 4

Apply the fertilizer to the bentgrass using a broadcast fertilizer spreader. Add half the product to the spreader's hopper and spread it in strips. Fill the hopper with the other half and spread it in strips going the opposite direction so that you have a criss-cross pattern. Water the bentgrass to a depth of 6 inches after fertilizing.
